Tesla open-sourced their patents this week. They have no competition in a small market yet, so perhaps this will spur growth and acceptance of electric cars that can do more than go to the grocery store and back without needing a charge.
It should come as no surprise that Tesla would be out of step with normal business practices. They run afoul of the major auto companies, in that they don't run middlemen showroom. This has rubbed some major auto manufacturers the wrong way, since they only sell vehicles through resellers, aka, privately owned dealerships. Those dealerships usually have some pretty big repair operations built-in. With the lack of well-timed explosions and the associated well-oiled machinery powering the cars (no internal combustion engines), Tesla may not have as much of a need for repair facilities of that scale.
